1. A concept of definition map helps students consider words in several different lights. The attached template investigates the following categories - What is it like? What is it based on? Why does it matter. You can easily change one of the categories to have students give examples of the word, draw an illustration, etc.

2. Make Connections - Share your screen in LL and display Visual Thesaurus, Lexipedia, or VisuWords. Type in your word and discuss the connections associated with the word. This is a great time to discuss synonyms, antonyms, and categories.

3. Inspiration or Kidspiration - Share your screen in LL and use Inspiration or Kidspiration to help students explore the meaning of words. You can make connections including definitions, definitions in your own words, words used in sentences, examples and/or non-examples, pictures that represent the word, etc. Get Inspiration or Kidspiration installed on your computer by calling Tech Support.
4. Use the Word Map below in your LiveLesson room to help students understand the meaning of a word. Students can work together to come up with the definition, examples, and what the word is like.

12. Create a Word Cloud - Choose an excerpt of text from a primary source document, article, story, lab report, poem, etc. that contains vocabulary students need to master. (For example - In Social Studies teachers might use excerpts from primary source documents like Washington's Farewell Address or Patrick Henry's Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death Speech) Copy and paste the text into Taxedo or Wordle. The words are sized based on the frequency of use within the text. Discuss the word cloud with students in LiveLesson.

13. Discovery Education - Go to Discovery Education and type the concept/word you would like help with. Browse videos and locate one that discusses the concept/vocab word you would like students to understand. Show the video within your LiveLesson room and discuss with students. Discovery Education is available to students and teachers through their links box.

15. Secret Word - Show THIS VIDEO CLIP of the "secret word" used in Pee Wee's Playhouse. Then each time the academic vocabulary word you are using in LL is said, students "scream". This is a fun way to engage students in the LL and enables them to hear the academic vocab word used several times.
16. Vocabulary Graph - Use the attached file to have students graph the number of times designated Academic Vocabulary words are used during LiveLesson.
