Listed below are the academic vocabulary words for 3rd grade. The words and definition for each subject area are given. Please work to incorporate a minimum of 2-3 words into your LiveLessons, phone conversations, webmails, and teacher feedback each week throughout the school year.

Language Arts Antonyms: Words that have the opposite meaning.
Article: A short writing piece often found in magazines and newspapers Author: A person who writes a story, book or article Author's Purpose: The reason the author wrote the story. The 3 purposes are to 1) inform (informational and a lot of facts), 2) persuade (to try and get you to see something their way) or to 3) entertain (story is fictional). Cause and Effect: Cause and effect are and action/reaction combination. The cause is the reason something happens, and the effect is what happens as a result. Character: A person, animal, or object (thing) that the author uses in telling a story Compare: To see how things are alike Context Clues: The method by which the meaning of unknown words is found by using parts of sentences around the unknown word Contrast: To see how things are different Dialogue: The words spoken by the characters in a story, novel, play or other form of literature Drawing Conclusions: Information that a reader implies or infers from a story. Fantasy: A story about something that could never happen. Main Idea: What a story is mainly about. These are usually found at the beginning of a story. Predict: To make a guess about what will happen next. Problem: Conflict within the story Realism: A story that could happen in real life. Sensory Details: Words that show how something looks, tastes, smells, feels or sounds. Sequence: The following of one thing after another; first, next, then, last Setting: When and where the story takes place Summarize: A shortened version of what you read put into your own words. Synonym: Words that have the same meanings. |

ScienceAdaptation- A trait that helps one kind of living thing survive in its environment.
Change of state-A physical change of matter from one state—solid, liquid, or gas—to another state because of a change in the energy of the matter. Climate-The average weather pattern of a region over time. Competition-A relationship between or among living things for resources such as food, space, shelter, etc. Earthquake- A sudden shaking of the rock that makes up Earth's crust. Extinct- an organism no longer alive on Earth. Force- A push or a pull Glacier-A huge mass of ice or snow that forms where snow gathers faster than it melts and flows along with water over an area of land. Gravity-A force of attraction, or pull, between objects. Instinct-An inherited behavior that is automatic. Learned behavior-An action or set of actions that an animal changes through experience. Mineral- A natural, nonliving, usually solid material found in rock. Nonrenewable- A natural material or source of energy that is useful to people and cannot be replaced easily. Organism-A living thing that carries out basic life functions on its own. Recycle- To make new objects or materials from old objects or materials. Renewable- A useful material that is replaced quickly in nature. Species- A group of organisms that reproduces only with other members of their own group. |
